WEST PARIS – David MacDowell, chairman of the Arthur L. Mann Memorial Library trustees, said Monday that work has begun on replacing the roof, which has been in disrepair for several months.
MacDowell said that G&E Roofing is ripping off the roof and installing a vapor barrier to act as a temporary roof.
“Knowles Industrial of Gorham, a masonry restoration firm, will then repair the masonry at and below the counter-flashing,” MacDowell said. “Once Knowles finishes their part in the project, G&E will return and install the new roof.”
The project will cost $70,000, MacDowell said. It’s being funded by the library’s reserve account, interest accrued from the Hugo Heikkinen Trust Fund, donations, and $10,000 appropriated by voters.
The library was built in 1926, based on a design by Gibbs & Pulsifer of Lewiston.
MacDowell said that after the roof is finished additional masonry work will be needed.”
“The board of trustees and the West Paris Friends of the Library will continue to raise funds throughout the year so the work can be completed next year,” he added.
Work began this week on replacing the Arthur L. Mann Memorial Library’s roof in West Paris.
