FRYEBURG — Horses Across Maine, a nonprofit organization, is planning a 280-mile trek across Maine in an effort to raise funds for various issues facing Maine veterans.
An enthusiastic group of people plan to take to the highways on horseback, starting in Fryeburg sometime in the late spring of 2018. The riders plan to go through 60 towns, ending in Eastport.
The trip is expected to take approximately two to three weeks, travelling approximately 25 miles a day and allowing time to rest both riders and horses, as well as to participate in fundraising events and interacting with the public.
As the riders go from town to town, stopping at American Legion locations and Maine veterans’ hospitals, they will distribute flyers with website information dedicated to veterans’ causes and resources, as well as increasing the awareness of Maine veterans’ charities and needs. They will encourage and, at times, assist legions and other organizations in hosting fundraising events, such as potluck suppers, bingo and yard sales.
The funds raised will go to, but not limited to, the following charities: the Travis Mills Foundation, Veterans’ Homes of Maine, Maine Homeless Veterans, American Legion and Patriot Guard.
Tax-deductible support for this cause will help to sustain the horses on the trek and contribute to help with brave men and women of Maine who have honorably served in the military.
The ride is open to anyone interested in a single-day ride.
Contributions may be made to Horses Across Maine and mailed to Horses Across Maine, c/o Peter Seames, 88 Roller Rink Road, Oxford, ME, 04270.
The next fundraising events will take place Saturdays, May 20 and June 10, at the Oxford American Legion and will include a poker run and on horseback. The rides begin at noon.
