LEWISTON — The teams on each side of Saturday’s lopsided boys’ lacrosse game between Camden Hills and Lewiston were thankful for what they called a “wakeup call,” for very different reasons.

Seven different Lewiston players scored and goalie Bryan Wagg came within five minutes of a shutout behind a solid defensive effort as the Blue Devils walloped the previously unbeaten Windjammers 14-1 at Don Roux Field.

“We had a couple of tough games against Brunswick, and we wanted to just kind of hit the reset button, get back to basics and start playing some good lacrosse heading into the playoffs,” Lewiston coach Ben Fournier said.

On the other side of the field, Camden Hills rocketed out to an 8-0 start this season, but had played just one game against a team with a winning record.

“This was a perfect time for a game like this,” Camden Hills coach Wade Ward said. “It’s kind of bittersweet, but it’s a perfect time for a game like this.”

It didn’t take long for the Blue Devils to assert their dominance Saturday. Jaheim Whiting, Alex Rivet, Jayden Wilson and Gunnar Wade all sniped goals in the first four minutes of the game to put the home team in front early.

“That was one of our goals,” Fournier said. “Lately we’ve been having slower starts to games, and digging ourselves in a hole before actually settling down and playing our game. One of the goals was to come out flying and punch them in quick.”

Camden Hills was shocked, and had a hard time dealing with Lewiston’s speed.

“They do such a fantastic job of moving the ball so well, so fast,” Ward said. “It’s hard to make those adjustments, when you’re trying to work something different, obviously it wasn’t working for us.”

As quickly as the Devils (6-4) had made it 4-0, they added three more. Wilson, Rivet and Roman Dennis all scored in a span of 54 seconds later in the opening quarter to push the Lewiston lead to 7-0.

And all before the Windjammers (8-1) could even get a shot off against Wagg. The Lewiston defense stymied Camden Hills all game long.

“The defense played great today,” Fourier said. “We sent zone today for a quarter, and man-to-man, kind of popped in and out of that. It was good to work on that.”

Lewiston added another goal in the second quarter to take an 8-0 lead at the half as Camden Hills shored up its defense a bit.

The Devils controlled play in the third quarter, as well, popping in three more goals near the end of the frame for an 11-0 advantage.

The Windjammers broke up Wagg’s shutout bid with 5:05 to play when Elliott Matlack snuck a shot from the left side through the keeper’s lefts on a man-up situation. Lewiston struck for two more shortly thereafter to finish the scoring.

The Devils finish their season with games against Edward Little and Mt. Ararat, while Camden Hills faces a tough Gardiner squad — one of three teams to beat Lewiston this year — before closing against Erskine and Cony.
