An unmanned 16-foot Tracker boat, left, moves across Pennesseewassee Lake in Norway on Thursday evening after its driver, Daniel Grover, 41, of Norway was thrown out of it when it struck another watercraft. Other boaters tried to stop the Tracker, which eventually stalled, Maine Warden Service Cpl. John MacDonald said Friday.

NORWAY — A local man was thrown into Pennesseewassee Lake on Thursday evening when two boats collided, Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service said Friday.

Daniel Grover, 41, was going about 20 mph in a 16-foot Tracker a few hundred yards off the southeast shore when he turned into a Glastron boat that was passing him, MacDonald said. The Glastron was driven by Philip Lamoureux, 67, who had 22-year-old Shaun Lamoureux with  him.

“While Lamoureux was passing, Grover turned right, not seeing the Glastron boat,” Macdonald said. “Neither operator saw the impending collision with enough time to react, and Grover’s boat struck Lamoureux’s boat on the port side.”

Grover was thrown into the lake and Lamoureux turned his boat around and picked him up, MacDonald said.

None of the men were wearing a life jacket, MacDonald said.

Grover’s boat “was traveling unmanned in the lake, and eventually, it stalled after some attempts to stop it,” MacDonald said.

“Both boats were registered with proper safety equipment,” he said.

The accident occurred at about 6 p.m. off the shore near the Red Schoolhouse on Route 118.

Norway fire and police personnel responded to the scene, along with PACE Ambulance Service.
