AUBURN — The Maine Iris Society’s flower show and perennial plant sale will be from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 27, at the Auburn Middle School. Those attending should use the entrance to the cafeteria at the rear of the building. There is no charge to attend.
This is the 40th Median Iris and Spring Flower Show the Iris Society has hosted and the 57th year that they have hosted a flower show.
The show will have both Horticultural and Artistic Divisions. The Horticultural Division will consist of named single iris stalks and spring flowers.
New this year will be a group of English Boxes displaying five iris flowers each to be viewed from above.
The best spring flower will receive the Bernard McLaughlin award. The best iris will be the Queen of the Show.
It is expected that most of the irises in the show will be the median or dwarf irises that bloom earlier than tall bearded and Siberian irises.
The People’s Choice lilac display winner is voted by people attending the show.
The Artistic division includes floral designs featuring irises. This year, the theme is “Sing Along with Irises;” entries will relate to song titles from various musical genres.
The sale features potted plants from members’ gardens. They are hardy and have wintered in gardens. There may also be some annual seedlings.
Judges choose the Queen of the Show at last year’s Maine Iris Society flower show. This year’s show is set for May 27.
