Maryland’s Ed Mullen set a men’s lacrosse NCAA Tournament single-game record with 12 points in 1976. Syracuse’s Gary Gait matched that in 1988.
That mark stood until Saturday when Bates College freshman Matt Chlastawa tallied 13 points to set an all-divisions NCAA Tournament record in the Bobcats’ 26-14 third-round victory over Amherst.
Chlastawa (Westfield, Massachusetts) scored nine goals and had four assists. The nine goals sets a Division III tournament record and ties the all-divisions tournament mark that has been achieved three previous times.
Bates senior Charlie Fay put up 12 points (eight goals, four assist), which would have tied the preview NCAA Tournament record if not for Chlastawa.
However, Fay’s output Saturday made him Bates’ all-time goal scorer, and he now has 161 in his career.
The 40 combined goals by the Bobcats and Mammoths on Saturday are a new NCAA Tournament record in any division, surpassing the 39 scored by Ohio Wesleyan and Kutztown in the 1976 Division II tournament.
Bates and Amherst also tied the NCAA Tournament record for combined shots with 130 (Bates had 73, Amherst had 57). It also breaks the 26-year-old Division III mark.
Bobcats hitting the road
With Saturday’s high-scoring victory, Bates moves on to the quarterfinals to face Wesleyan on Wednesday.
Many, including some at Bates College, thought that the game would be played at Garcelon Field in Lewiston.
Instead, the game will be played a Wesleyan in Middletown, Connecticut.
Bates is ranked No. 3 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association’s coaches poll, and Wesleyan is No. 4.
However, the tournament is based on regional rankings, and in the North Region, Wesleyan is No. 2 and Bates is No. 3. (RIT is No. 1.)
Locals thrive at NEICAAA
For the third consecutive meet, University of Southern Maine duo Drew Gamage, of Sabattus, and Connor Harris, of Auburn, finished first and second in the triple jump.
At the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEICAAA) outdoor track and field championships over the weekend, Gamage, an Oak Hill graduate, placed first with a 48-foot, 8-inch jump. Edward Little grad Harris was the runner up by 3 inches with a 47-5.
Gamage took first at the New England Alliance/Little East Conference Championships two weeks ago, and Harris won at the New England Division III Championships earlier this month.
Gamage and Harris earn All-New England honors for their performances, along with several other USM athletes with local ties: Trey Rogers (Auburn/Edward Little), sixth in the 4×100 relay; Roger Charest (Auburn/Edward Little), eighth in the 800; and Adela Kalilwa of Lewiston, who placed fifth in the women’s triple jump and fourth in the 4×100.
Little East honors
Harris, a senior, was voted the Little East Conference men’s field athlete of the year by the conference’s coaches.
Kalilwa, a freshman, was voted women’s rookie field athlete of the year.
Little East softball coaches picked former St. Dom’s standout Mary Caron of Lewiston for the all-conference first team.
Caron, a senior shortstop, was the University of Southern Maine’s top hitter in 2017 with a .349 average on 38 hits, 13 of which went for extra bases. She also drove in 21 runs.
Earlier this month, Caron was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District first team.
NAC awards
University of Maine at Farmington freshman utility Derek Bowen (Benton) was named to the All-North Atlantic Conference baseball first team. Teammate Mark Leahy (Rochester, New Hampshire), a senior third baseman, made the second team, and fellow senior Jordan Croteau (South Paris) was named to the sportsmanship team.
Three UMaine-Farmington softball players were honored by the NAC: sophomore catcher Kylie Cunningham (Bangor) was voted to the first team, sophomore outfielder Elizabeth Walker (Falmouth) made the second team, and senior Alison Hamilton (Portsmouth, Rhode Island) was picked for the sportsmanship team.
Leah Desjardins of Poland was named the NAC’s women’s track and field rookie of the year. The Husson University freshman claimed the conference’s 100-meter dash championship with a time of 12.90 seconds.
UMaine-Farmington senior Sean Cabaniss (Vassalboro) was named the NAC men’s track and field senior scholar athlete of the year.
Lacrosse all-region
Bates College’s Camille Belletete, Drew Barry and Allison Dewey have been named to the IWLCA All-Pilgrim Region women’s lacrosse team.
Belletete (Jaffrey, New Hampshire) led the Bobcats in goals (33), assists (eight) and points (41). She also was picked for the All-NESCAC second team.
Barry (Portland), a senior captain, was second on the team in caused turnovers with 23.
