JAY —  Nate Goodine led a group of four players with multiple hits Friday as hot bats led Spruce Mountain to an important 4-2 baseball win over Morse.

Goodine and Shane Pelletier led the Phoenix (4-3) with three hits each, while Noah Preble and Landon Brochu each belted out two hits.

Tucker Banger led the Shipbuilders (6-2) with two hits in the contest.

Austin Gilboe scattered six hits to earn the mound win, while Morse reliever Ryley Lamorre suffered the loss.  

Rangeley 2, Valley 0

RANGELEY — Ricky Thompson’s RBI triple and solo home run were enough to provide Rangeley with a fine 2-0 victory over Valley in more local baseball action Friday. 

The Lakers (4-2) put a run on the board in the second before adding an insurance run in the sixth. 

Veteran pitcher Kyle Larochelle tossed a two-hitter to earn the shutout, while Nathan Ames suffered the loss.  

Telstar 11, Mt. Abram 0

SALEM — Tanner Wheeler threw a no-hitter Friday as Telstar shut down Mt. Abram 11-0 in more mid-season baseball action. 

Tristen Lilly led the Rebels with a pair of hits, while Wheeler helped his own cause with an RBI double. Boston Ludden clubbed a home run for Telstar in a well-rounded effort. 

The Rebels jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first and were never challenged. 

Falmouth 11, Poland 1

FALMOUTH — Second baseman Colin Coyne went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI to lead Falmouth to an 11-1 victory in five innings over Poland in baseball action Friday afternoon.

The Yachtsmen (9-0) scored six times in the bottom of the fourth to take a 10-0 lead. First baseman Griffin Aube went 3-for-3 with two RBIs for Falmouth.

The Knights (3-7) put a run on the board in the top of the fifth, but Falmouth invoked the 10-run rule in the bottom of the frame with their 11th run of the game.

Senior left fielder Quinn Callahan had a hit, stolen base and scored Poland’s run in the losing effort.

Dirigo 5, Hall-Dale 0

FARMINGDALE — Sophomore left fielder Chandler Redmond smashed a two-run single in the sixth inning as Dirigo pounced on Hall-Dale for a 5-0 victory in baseball action Friday afternoon.

Junior pitcher Luke Luedders had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning for the Cougars (4-5) until Hall-Dale came up with a pair of hits.

Junior right fielder Tim Cookson accounted for one of the Bulldog’s (5-4) two hits in the losing effort.

Softball

Madison 8, Oak Hill 2

MADISON — Madison put three runs on the board early and never eased off the gas, racing away to an 8-2 win over Oak Hill in a mid-season softball tilt Friday. 

Maura Hall led the Bulldogs (8-0) with an RBI double, while Ashley Emery belted out a pair of hits. The Raiders (5-2) outhit their opponents 12-6, yet five errors proved to be their demise. 

Oak Hill was paced by Abby Nadeau with three hits and two RBIs, while Sadie Waterman also pounded out three hits. Charlotte Waterman and Kiera Young also contributed, with two hits apiece. 

Madeline Wood earned her eighth win of 2017, while Sadie Waterman suffered the loss. 

Leavitt 8, Belfast 4

TURNER — Kassie Murch belted a bases-loaded double in the third inning to propel Leavitt to a 8-4 softball victory over Belfast on Friday. 

Emily Shaw chipped in for the Hornets with a two-run double in the fourth. Hope Hutchinson contributed a two-run double in the fifth inning. 

Vanessa Groton led Belfast with two hits and two RBIs. Emily Swan scattered five hits to earn the win, while Mary Gale suffered the loss. 

Lewiston 8, Brewer 2

LEWISTON — Danielle Cyr scattered nine hits and drew ample run support Friday as Lewiston hustled to a 8-2 victory over Brewer. 

Jordan Mynahan led the Blue Devils (7-3) with two hits and five RBIs, highlighted by a home run and a triple. Jordyn Rubin and Kallie May chipped in with three hits each, while Emily Mousseau pounded out a pair of hits. 

Olivia Catten, MJ Sellers and Becca Gideon all belted out two hits for Brewer (4-5). 

Telstar 13, Mt. Abram 1

BETHEL — Josie Forbes had three hits, including a double, while driving in two runs in Telstar’s 13-1 softball victory over Mt. Abram in five innings Friday.

Aneah Bartlett had an RBI double in the fourth, and Julia Cherkis added a double. Tasha Hart finished the game with two hits for the Rebels.

Kylee Martin went the distance for Telstar (6-3), striking out four and giving up three hits.

Mt. Abram is now 1-8.

Women’s rowing

Bates earns NCAA berth

WORCESTER, Mass. — Bates College, the nation’s No. 1-ranked women’s rowing program, won both varsity eight grand finals and qualified for the NCAA Division III championship at the National Invitational Rowing Championships on Friday.

Bates’ top boat won a potential NCAA championship preview, finishing the 2,000-meter course 0.401 seconds ahead of fourth-ranked Williams, 6:45.422 to 6:45.823.

Third-ranked Ithaca came in a close third (6:46.169), No. 6 Wellesley was fourth place (6:54.104), No. 7 Tufts (6:55.290) took fifth and No. 2 Wesleyan (6:57.632) came in sixth.

The Bobcats claimed the program’s third NESCAC championship in four years by defeating conference foes Williams, Tufts and Wesleyan. The conference title garners Bates an automatic berth in the Division III championships.

The Bobcats’ second varsity eight defeated second-place Williams by more than six seconds.

Bates’ third boat finished second to Williams.

Men’s rowing

Bates wins NESCAC

WORCESTER, Mass. — The Bates College men’s rowing team earned its second NESCAC championship by placing second at the National Invitational Rowing Championships on Friday.

Hobart won the men’s varsity eight grand final, finishing in 5:59.059 to edge Bates (6:01.363).

Because the Bobcats were the top-performing NESCAC boat, they claim the conference title.

However, Hobarts win denies Bates a chance to fulfill its goal of competing at IRA Nationals.

The Bobcats also placed second to Hobart in the second varsity eight and the third varsity eight grand finals.
