LEWISTON — On Tuesday Mayor Robert Macdonald issued a statement of concern about the contents of a postcard he received in the mail at his home on Friday.
According to the statement, the postcard related to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement would be coming into a community and deporting people.
Macdonald said he was “concerned that the card’s information will spark fear within the immigrant community.”
If anyone received the same postcard, Macdonald “encourages immigrants who are here legally that they have nothing to worry about.”
According to the Immigrant Resource Center of Maine, there are currently about 7,500 East African immigrants — the largest segment of the immigrant population — living in Androscoggin County. Most are living in Lewiston.
