MECHANIC FALLS — The Town Council on Monday agreed to begin planning for a new Town Office complex.

Town Manager Koriene Low said the former Mechanic Falls High School building on Lewiston Street has reached the point where, after years of patching, it has become too expensive to operate.

She said all councilors agree it’s time to do something.

Councilor Cathy Fifield was tasked with taking the lead in forming a Building Committee.

The committee will look into the space needs of municipal departments, including municipal offices, the library and Police Department.

The council intends for the new office to be on the large plot where the current office stands.

The Building Committee will evaluate possible locations.

In other business, the council announced the the Recreation Committee has paid the money it borrowed from the town for ball field lights.

The council also decided to remove the telephone next to the Municipal Building’s lower entrance. The telephone was installed to allow residents emergency police contact. However, because most people have cellphones the telephone is no longer needed.

The council also set new hours for the transfer station: Wednesdays from noon to 4 p.m.; Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The council accepted the resignation of Jason Boenig from the Recreation Committee and appointed Jeremy Klar to the Planning Board.
