LIVERMORE — Maple Lane and a portion of River Road were blocked off early Tuesday as a safety precaution as police tried to talk an adult man out of his family’s residence.
The man was in a mental health crisis, Androscoggin County Chief Deputy William Gagne said.
A family member reported the situation at about 3:50 a.m. The man had potential access to weapons.
Sheriff’s deputies, a Maine State Police negotiator and some members of the Tactical Team and a Livermore Falls police officer worked to make sure everything stayed calm and a peaceful resolution was reached.
“We tried to talk to him” but he did not want to talk, Gagne said.
They were able to get other family members out of the residence.
The Sheriff’s Office contacted Regional School Unit 73 to let representatives know that a school bus would not be able to go down Maple Lane and later a portion of River Road from the intersection of Robinson Road and the intersection of Strickland Loop.
Two schoolchildren on Maple Lane could not get to the bus, RSU 73 Transportation Director Ken Vining said. Later they were told that a portion of River Road was blocked off but a bus had already picked up students, he said.
The man’s doctor was contacted to find out the best course of action to help the man inside the residence.
After assuring the man was alive and well, police backed up and let the person deescalate to make sure the situation did not get worse, Gagne said.
Maple Lane was shut down for about 6½ hours.
An armored vehicle was brought in but not used.
