PARIS — There will be a “re-creation” of a vintage mini-Maybasket in honor of an old Paris tradition at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, at the Paris Public Library. All ages are welcome.

In 1960s South Paris, there was a tradition throughout May, in which groups of children and teens would purchase a bright and colorful tissue paper Maybasket from the local Rexall Drug Store or from Dignan’s Hardware. The baskets were filled with penny candy from local stores.

The group would then walk to a recipient’s house, knock on the door and simultaneously yell, “Maybasket.” Then, the group would run. The recipient of the basket would have to catch everyone in the group before he or she could eat the candy, and share it.
