CHESTERVILLE — Selectmen learned recently that the $1,000 approved by voters to plan a townwide celebration this year can’t be accepted by the North Chesterville Extension Homemakers.

Homemakers is a program of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, and university officials told Gill the money couldn’t be accepted because it wasn’t for a specific Homemakers’ project and the group isn’t a nonprofit.

Selectman Edward Hastings IV asked if there was a nonprofit in town to which to give the money.

Interim Treasurer Erin Norton said a special town meeting would be needed to move the money elsewhere.

Board Vice Chairwoman Tiffany Estabrook suggested the money be set aside in a separate account for Chesterville Day, a popular event in years past that included a parade and a chicken barbecue.

A letter inviting other groups to participate in Chesterville Day will be sent, Planning Committee member Josette Billian said. The committee encourages attendance at it next meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, at the Town Office.
