LIVERMORE FALLS — Police said a Jay man faces charges because he refused to leave the Cumberland Farms store on Main Street early Tuesday morning and fled from police four times before being caught.

Guner Vicelich, 28, was charged with assault, refusing to submit to detention or arrest, disorderly conduct and criminal trespass, Police Chief Ernest Steward said.

According to police, officer Troy Reed was near the store at about 1:52 a.m. and heard and saw someone trying to get a man to leave the store parking lot. The clerk told Reed a man, later identified as Vicelich, was asked to leave because he was yelling, swearing and causing problems. When Vicelich refused, a customer approached the clerk and Vicelich because the clerk was being mistreated, Steward said.

While Reed was talking with the clerk, Vicelich approached the store again and Reed gave him disorderly and criminal trespass warnings, Steward said. When Vicelich refused to leave, Reed tried to arrest him, but he ran into the woods.

While Jay police Cpl. Jeffrey Fournier was coming to assist Reed, Vicelich returned to the store and Fournier tried again to arrest him, but Vicelich ran again, Steward said.

Police checked Vicelich’s former residence on Vine Street and found the jacket he had been wearing lying on the ground. When Vicelich came outside, Reed tried to arrest him again, but Vicelich ran again, Steward said.

Vicelich was later seen walking down Wheeler Street, was chased to Knapp Street  and continued to refuse to stop. 

Eventually caught, he was sprayed with Mace, placed in handcuffs, and a NorthStar EMS ambulance crew was called to wash his eyes of the chemical.

But when police tried to put him in a cruiser, Vicelich braced his legs and body on the cruiser and threw himself on the ground. While police were attempting to place him in leg irons, he kicked Reed, Steward said.

Wilton police and Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department deputies were also called to assist.

Vicelich was put on a stretcher and taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston before being taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn.

He posted $560 cash bail Tuesday and was released, a corrections officer said.
