The 18th Annual Mountain Valley Rec Basketball Tournament was held on March 31-April 2nd. There were 26 teams that competed in 3 divisions, 10 A, 11 B and 5 Senior team. Games were played at Mountain Valley High School, Middle School, Dirigo High School and Middle School, with a three team round robin Friday and Saturday. A playoff round and championships were on Sunday.
Team Zespy from Western Maine won the the Senior Division (over 40) championship over Chapter 11 Furniture.
The B Division was won by Hink’s Bait of Wiscasset MVP was won by Nick Hinkley of Hink’s Bait. All star awards were given out to Matt McCray and Chris Hersom of Hink’s Bait, Arsenio Santa Maria and Brandon Giguere of Shoo2ers.
The A Division was won by Class Acts Property Management of Portland who bested Grigsby Reality’s The Gym Ratz of Windham. MVP was given to Jose Novchanthavong of Class Acts. All Stars were Zach Leal and Conner Sullivan of Class Acts, Bobbie Planutis and Jeff Mancherster of The Gym Ratz.
The Slam Dunk Contest was won by Conner Sullivan. Jose Navchanthavong won the foul shooting contest and Geoff Grigsby won the three point contest.
The tournament successfully raised over $14,000 through the MV Booster Ad/Sponsor Banner Program designed for the event and tournament proceeds. Major support is designed for The MV Boosters. Also supported were The Falcon Club, Dirigo Baseball, River Valley Rec, The GRCC, MVMS and Mountain Valley Cheerleaders, who with coach Josette Duguay helped all weekend at MVHS.
Next year’s tournament is April 6-8. Already planned and expected are 10 A Division, 12 B Division, six senior and planning on six women’s teams. With another potential bigger field and additional sponsor support, The Mountain Valley Rec Basketball Tournament will continue to grow and support basketball and recreation in the River Valley area.
