WILTON — A Rumford man and a local police officer were injured Wednesday when police responded to a report of two female caseworkers being assaulted in the parking lot of the CareerCenter on Routes 2 and 4.

A foot chase ensued when officer Ethan Kyes spotted Matthew Harrup, 24, of Rumford walking along the highway, Sgt. Chad Abbott said.

When Harrup saw Kyes, he fled back to the parking lot and assaulted one of the female caseworkers as he ran past her with Kyes in pursuit on foot, Abbott said.

Harrup continued to run away.

Kyes caught Harrup, who actively resisted arrest, Abbott said.

At one point, Harrup tried to grab officer Kyes’ handgun from its holster, Abbott said, but Kyes was able to retain control of it.

Eventually, Kyes was able to subdue Harrup and placed him under arrest, Abbott said.

Harrup was treated for minor facial injuries by NorthStar EMS ambulance personnel.

Kyes sustained minor cuts and bruises that did not require medical attention, Abbott said.

Kyes arrested Harrup on two counts of assault and one count of failing to submit to arrest. He took Harrup to the Franklin County Detention Center in Farmington.

Harrup was held on $350 cash bail. He remained at the jail as of 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
