JAY — Selectpersons voted unanimously Monday to put a tax-acquired apartment house and land at 35 Main St. out to bid for a minimum of $6,600.
The building contains two small apartments, Selectperson Tom Goding said. He and board Vice Chairman Tim DeMillo visited the property, as did the town’s tax-assessing agent.
The property on the corner of Otis Street has no heating units.
Selectpersons considered options of putting it out to bid to cover legal and advertising expenses. Owed taxes on the property are $2,913 and sewer fees are $2,148. The water is off at the property, but the Livermore Falls Water District is owed $260, according to Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere’s information.
Other options are to put it out to bid with no minimum bid or to look into taking the house down and creating a parking area or green space, LaFreniere said.
Goding said he would like to see the town recoup its cost, but if it can’t, then the house could be torn down to make a green space.
“I think it has more value as a green area,” he said.
Chairman Terry Bergeron agreed.
The town assesses the property at $13,840. Of that amount, the land is valued at $9,040 and the building at $4,800, LaFreniere said.
The last two tax-acquired apartment buildings went for $500 and $2,500, she said.
Trees will be cut this week on a bank on the property to improve the limited visibility.
There is demolition disposal money in the budget but none in the proposed budget for 2017-18, Public Works Director John Johnson said.
