Lewiston High School punctuated its 2016-17 competitive cheering season Saturday with a second-place finish at the New England cheerleading championships in Providence, R.I.
Lewiston, which won the Maine Class A state title this season and was the defending New England champion, finished behind last year’s New England runner up, Fairhaven High School of Fairhaven, Conn.
Bangor High School placed second in its division Saturday, as well. Because Lewiston has a male cheerleader, it competes in a different category at New Englands than Bangor, which competes with all female athletes.
Maine Class C champion Lisbon High School finished 10th in its 12-team division after having to regroup when one of the Greyhounds’ athletes suffered a broken leg during their routine. Because the injury happened mid-routine, the team was allowed to regroup and perform a second time at the end of the rotation.
“The remaining athletes pulled together and reworked the stunts, th team returned to the floor at the end to finish from the point of injury,” Lisbon coach Nicki Adams said. “They nailed it. I am beyond proud of these athletes. The teamwork today was amazing.”
