LEWISTON — The number one seed Falmouth Yachtsmen have returned to the Class A South regional final for the fifth time in the past six seasons after another tough regional semifinal win, this time a 5-2 triumph against Portland/Deering on Saturday.

They have had close games in the past in the second round of the playoffs.

“Before (Noble/Wells), it was Gorham. Last year it was Thornton (Academy),” Falmouth coach Deron Barton said. “You have to respect the teams,” Falmouth coach Deron Barton said. “You can’t take them lightly, they deserve respect. Like I said I like how these kids play. They have a bright future in Portland/Deering and I am really glad to see that.”

Last year, they squeaked by Thornton Academy 3-2, in 2014 it was a 5-4 victory over Noble/Wells to get them into the regional final. In 2013, they were finally able to shake off Gorham 6-3 to play for a regional crown.

They will face the second seeded Cheverus Tuesday night at 8 p.m. at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. The Stags are making their second appearance in the state’s final four in the past three seasons. The Stags made it to the regional final in 2015, where they lost to the Scarborough Red Storm 5-2.

Before 2015, they hadn’t appeared in a regional final since 2006 where they went on to win their second straight championship.

Both teams had solid seasons, as the Yachtsmen have compiled a 15-3-1 record as they put 89 pucks in the net and only allowing 36 goals. They enter the contest winning their past six games including a 5-0 and a 4-3 victory over the Stags.

“We prepare the same way like we have all season long,” Barton said. “I think if we execute our game plan and we have a solid commitment to playing as a team we will be fine.”

Cheverus is 15-5 and they put up 79 goals this season while allowing 48. Since the new year, the Stags have won 13 of 15 games with the only two losses coming against Falmouth.

Coach Dan Lucas likes what he saw from his team in a 4-3 loss to Falmouth in the final regular season contest for both teams.

“Go out and play them hard. They are a good team,” Lucas said after the 4-3 overtime win over Scarborough Saturday. “We had a really good game against them at the end of the year. We skated well with them and its going to be an up and down game. The boys are feeling up (to it) and the trains are on the tracks.”

Lucas wasn’t quite as positive of the first game of the year which was played at Falmouth Family Ice on Valentine’s Day.

“Well, the first game, I don’t think we played our best,” Lucas said. “It was probably our worst game of the year on the schedule. The last game we were looking ahead at the opportunity that we wanted to go out and play with them.”
