AUGUSTA — Portland wasted little time establishing itself as the alpha dog in a sequel that, like so many others, came nowhere close to living up to the hype of the original.

The Bulldogs defeated South Portland 60-38 to claim their second consecutive Class AA boys’ basketball state championship Saturday at the Augusta Civic Center.

Last year, Portland and South Portland had a classic showdown in the AA final, which the Bulldogs won 52-50 in double overtime.

Part Two was nothing like that. The Bulldogs had the game essentially wrapped up before halftime, leading 19-2 early in the second quarter and 26-10 at halftime.

Junior guard Terion Moss led Portland’s charge, scoring 11 points in the first half and finishing with a game-high 22. He also had nine rebounds and three assists.

South Portland made only 4 of 34 field goals in the first half, and finished 15 of 65 in the game.

Unfortunately, spectators sitting on South Portland’s side had better aim in the third quarter. A partially full bottle of Gatorade or some other sports drink was thrown onto the floor at the foot of one of the game’s officials. Later in the quarter, pieces of colorful candy — Skittles or M&Ms — were found on the same side of the court.

The Red Riots’ highlight of the game came in the fourth quarter when senior Cameron Deiley entered the game and drained three 3-pointers. Deiley topped South Portland (17-4) with nine points.

The Red Riots and Bulldogs (19-2) split their two regular season meetings. Edward Little was the only other team to beat Portland this season. The Red Eddies, the AA North runners-up, defeated the Bulldogs 76-70 on Dec. 22.
