LEWISTON — Sean Walsh played the role of hero Saturday night.
The defensive captain sent Cheverus to the regional final with a goal 2:49 into overtime, lifting the Stags over a stunned Scarborough team, 3-2.
The goal was his second goal of the game. The Stags will now face Falmouth in the regional final.
Colby Anton sent the game into overtimeon the power play after Justin Perry picked up a delay-of-game penalty for covering puck with his hand. The goal came with 1:32 remaining in regulation, and after Eric Murray had given the Red Storm a 3-2 lead at the 7:47 mark of the third period as his dipping shot went through two sets of legs.
Scarborough made quick work of the first power play of the game. Thirty-nine seconds into the man advantage, Skylar Pentingill found the back of the net off a rebound chance. The goal came 2:55 into the game, with Cam Smith and Justin Perry notching the assists.
Cheverus tied the game when senior defensive captain Sean Walsh went to the crease, where the puck was loose. He won the battle of attrition with Scarborough goalie Brandon Wasser and jammed home the puck with 1:28 remaining in the period.
The Stags took a 2-1 lead on a Ryan McSorley wrap around attempt at the 3:45 mark of the second. The goal was reviewed as the net came off its moorings, but was quickly confirmed. Luke Church had the only assist on the goal.
The Red Storm didn’t get their first shot of the period until seven minutes in. Once they got one off, they were able to pepper the Cheverus keeper, who made a couple outstanding saves in the period. Scarborough then got a couple of power play chances, and they converted as a Smith shot squirted through the keeper’s pads at the 11:34 mark.
