BRUNSWICK — Lennon LaBelle’s times got better over the course of the season for the Lewiston Blue Devils.
Saturday, the sophomore popped off some of his best work at the right time.
LaBelle turned a time of 54.30 in the 100-yard backstroke to earn second place, and a 56.03 in the 100-meter butterfly for a fifth-place finish to help lead Lewiston to a 10th-place finish out of 23 teams at the Class A swimming and diving championships at Bowdoin College.
Cheverus High School of Portland battled back and forth all day with Brunswick and Bangor High Schools before pulling away at the end to earn the Class A crown.
Bangor edged Brunswick for second place by five points. Thornton Academy and Scarborough rounded out the top five teams.
Shane Moore was a star for the Stags in the win, earning two individual honors in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. He also helped Cheverus to a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, and a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay, key points for the Stags.
Bangor’s Colby and Carson Prouty were instrumental in the Rams’ second-place finish.
Colby won a pair of events — the 200-yard IM and the 100-yard breast stroke, while Carson posted a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle and a win in the 100-yard backstroke event. The pair also helped Bangor to a win in the 200-yard medley, and a runner-up finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
LaBelle also helped Lewiston’s relay teams, along with Hayden Bavis, Elijah Escobar and Matt Forgues, to an eighth-place finish in both the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.
Escobar earned five points for the Devils in the 100-yard backstroke with a 12th-place finish, and Bavis added seven points with a 10th-place finish in the 100-yard breast stroke.
Edward Little High School of Auburn had a handful of athletes competing Saturday, as well. The team earned the sportsmanship award for the season, and also placed 20th in the team competition with 10 points.
Brendan Whitman posted all 10 EL points with an 11th-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle and a 13th-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke.
