The Winthrop boys and Oxford Hills, Gray-New Gloucester and Rangeley girls will be among the No. 1 seeds for the 2017 high school basketball tournament, according to the final Heal points standings released by the Maine Principals’ Association on Saturday.
The tournament begins on Tuesday with preliminary round action at the higher-seeded teams in classes A, B, C and D. Class AA starts its tournament with girls quarterfinal games on Wednesday at the Augusta Civic Center. It culminates with the state championships on March 3 and 4.
Seven boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will enter the 2017 tournament unbeaten — Winthrop, George Stevens Academy, Greely and Medomak Valley boys, Messalonskee, Gorham and Richmond girls. All are top seeds.
No. 1 Oxford Hills (17-1) and No. 2 Edward Little earned first-round byes in the AA North girls’ tournament. They await the winners of Wednesday’s quarterfinals. No. 6 Lewiston will battle No. 3 Deering for the right to face the Vikings in the semifinals. The Red Eddies will face the winner of No. 4 Cheverus vs. No. 5 Bangor.
Defending state champion Portland (17-1) earned the top seed in AA North boys. The Bulldogs and No. 2 Edward Little, which handed them their only loss this season, have byes to the semifinals. Portland draws the winner of No. 4 Cheverus vs. No. 5 Oxford Hills, while the Red Eddies will play either No. 3 Deering or No. 6 Windham. The boys quarterfinals are Thursday at ACC
The AA North girls and boys semifinals are Feb. 21.
Gray-New Gloucester (17-1) secured the top spot in B South girls. No. 9 Lisbon will travel to No. 8 Freeport in the prelims for the right to face the Patriots in the quarterfinals. No. 3 Mountain Valley and No. 7 Poland also earned byes to the quarterfinals at the Portland Expo. The Falcons will take on No. 6 Lincoln Academy while the Knights will face No. 2 Wells.
Yarmouth (16-2) is the top seed in B South boys and awaits the winner of the prelim pitting No. 8 Lake Region against No. 9 Gray-New Gloucester. No. 2 Spruce Mountain also earned a bye to the quarterfinals at the Portland Expo, where it will meet No. 7 Lisbon. No. 4 Oak Hill and No. 5 Lincoln Academy square off in another quarterfinal.
In C South boys, Winthrop (18-0) will take the ACC floor as the top seed against the winner of the prelim between No. 8 Searsport and No. 9 Wiscasset. Other prelim games feature No. 12 Dirigo travelling to No. 5 Hall-Dale and No. 11 Telstar visiting No. 6 Boothbay.
Richmond (18-0) heads the C South girls bracket. No. 9 Winthrop travels to Bethel to face No. 8 Gould Academy in a prelim to determine the Bobcats’ quarterfinal opponent. No. 3 Monmouth hosts No. 14 Searsport in a prelim, while No. 7 Hebron and No. 10 Mt. Abram will vie for the right to face No. 2 Boothbay.
There are no prelims in D South, where the Rangeley girls (15-3) will begin their state title defense against No. 8 Valley in the quarterfinals at ACC.
Other top seeds in the South are the Gorham girls in Class AA, Greely boys and girls in A and Greenville in D boys.
Other top seeds in the North are the Medomak Valley boys and Messalonskee girls in A, the Hermon boys and Houlton girls in B, George Stevens boys and Stearns girls in C, and Southern Aroostook boys and girls in D.
