AUGUSTA — Joseph “Joe” Berube Jr., 80, a native of Lewiston, passed away peacefully at his home in Augusta on Thursday, Feb. 2.

He was born in Lewiston, on May 3, 1936, the son of Joseph and Cecile (Roi) Berube. He attended local schools and at the age of 17 joined the U.S. Marines. He served for three years and was discharged with the rank of sergeant. He later married Lucille Seguin and they had two children, a boy and a girl. They lived in Connecticut for 15 years, but came back to Maine and settled in Lisbon, where he owned and operated a small grocery store for five years. He later became supervisor of the personnel department at Girton Foods for the processing plant for four years.

From Lisbon, he moved to Augusta and worked for the Maine State Police for five years, then transferred to Capital Security for three years. He later went to the State Health and Environmental Testing Lab, and was named Employee of the Year while in that department. He retired after 21 years of service for the state, which included his term in the military. He was predeceased by his parents and his former wife.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl (Hanlon) Cloutier Berube, whom he married on July 31, 1982; his children, Normand D. Berube and wife, Karen, of Auburn; Tina C. Berube of Bristol, Conn., Pamela S. Cornish and husband, Chris, of Seattle, Wash., and James P. Cloutier of Lewiston; a sister, Jacqueline Goulet and her husband, Paul; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
