LEWISTON — Rivalry week ended just about as good as it began for the Lewiston boys’ hockey team.

After routing Edward Little on the road 11-0 last Saturday, followed by a week full of just practices, the Blue Devils finished off the week with a 10-0 victory over St. Dominic Academy at Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Friday night.

“We’re striving to be perfect, right? And we put a lot of pressure on the kids,” Lewiston coach Jamie Belleau said. “We know we have a good club, but on any given night, if we make mistakes and don’t keep the game within ourselves and we try to do a little bit too much, we can get into trouble. And so tonight I thought overall it was one of our better games.”

The Blue Devils (13-1) staked themselves to a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals 35 seconds before the first period was five minutes old. Alex Robert opened the scoring, and Luc Dostie’s goal followed soon after.

But that was all the scoring they could muster despite sending 20 shots at Saints (6-7) goalie Kyle Welsh.

“I thought we had a lot of looks in the first,” Belleau said. “You expect St. Dom’s, they’re playing their archrival, they’re pushing pucks away from the front of the net. I thought that we missed some opportunities in the first period.”

Lewiston made sure to light the lamp more often against the St. Dom’s senior in the second. Cole Ouellette started with an unassisted goal just 24 seconds into the frame. Robert scored again to start a quick tandem of goals, with Jeromey Rancourt getting his first goal just 28 seconds later.

“Kind of seemed like the repeat of the game we played on January 12, where it was 1-0 after one, now this time it was 2-0 after one,” St. Dom’s coach Bob Parker said. “I kept on looking at the clock, I’m like, ‘Man, I hope it doesn’t happen again.’ They got a couple breaks. They passed the puck well and scored a couple goals on us.”

Cody Doyon scored twice on power plays, the first coming with just two seconds left on the man-advantage, the latter coming 12 seconds into a 5-on-4.

Those goals were sandwiched around a Sam Story goal that was assisted by Joe Bisson and Ouellette.

“I thought in the second we made a concerted effort to get to the net a little bit better,” Belleau said.

The Saints had their best chances when the score was still 3-0, putting four shots on Lewiston goalie Jacob Strout, who stopped them all.

Ouellette and Alex Rivet rounded out the scoring for Lewiston with third-period goals.

Strout had to make a pair of saves in the final two minutes to pick up the shutout, stopping eight shots in the process.

Welsh faced 51 shots and stopped 41 of them.

“Kyle left early Monday (against Falmouth) because he was sick,” Parker said. “He wanted to goaltend today, and he wanted to stay in the whole game. It took a lot of him to fight all, you know, not feeling the best in the world, plus playing a really good team like that.”
