That rivalry you just started getting used to in high school football?

Depending on which teams it involved, you might want to reconsider.

The Maine Principals’ Association Football Committee approved a tentative plan Thursday to create a fifth class for the next two-year classification cycle intended to aide struggling programs get back on their feet.

Six teams — Camden Hills, Maranacook, Sacopee Valley, Boothbay, Telstar and Old Orchard Beach — would be in the new “Class E” according to the proposal. Class E teams would not be determined by enrollment numbers, nor would they compete for a state title.

Also Thursday, the committee gave a preliminary glimpse at the other four classes, and where schools would be placed based on enrollment.

Notable among area teams who would shift are Poland and Mountain Valley, who would be in the new Class D South alongside Winthrop/Monmouth, Oak Hill, Dirigo and Lisbon, as well as reigning Class C champion Wells, which petitioned up this past cycle.

Leavitt Area High School of Turner, a perennial contender in Class B, is slated to slot into Class C South under the new structure, alongside York, Yarmouth, Cape Elizabeth and Gray-New Gloucester.

Mt. Blue of Farmington will remain in Class B alongside Biddeford, Gorham, Noble, Skowhegan, Lawrence and Cony.

Class A would continue to be the largest schools in Maine, and include North division entries Lewiston, Edward Little and Oxford Hills high schools.

Teams have until Feb. 13 to file a petition to move up — or down — in classification. On that day, the MPA’s classification committee will meet to consider the football committee’s proposal. The plan will then get kicked back to the football committee on Feb. 16 for any final tweaks before being put to a full membership vote.
