AUBURN — Eleven homes were evacuated Tuesday morning after a car struck a natural gas meter and severed the service line on Western Avenue, Auburn Fire Battalion Chief David Richard said.
Auburn Fire Chief Geoffrey Low said there were no injuries or property damage, and 25 people from the 11 buildings were able to return after repairs were made.
“Once the leak was stopped, Auburn Fire and Unitil (Gas Co.) crews checked adjacent buildings to ensure that gas had not migrated into them creating an additional hazard,” Low said. “One building was found to have dangerous levels of natural gas, which was quickly ventilated without incident.”
The accident occurred at 8:23 a.m. at 19 Western Ave.
Central Maine Power shut off electricity to the area and Western Avenue was closed to traffic. Unitil repaired the service line.
Auburn Fire responded to the scene with assistance from Auburn Police, Unitil, and Mechanic Falls and Poland fire departments.
CMP restored power and the scene was cleared at 11:18 a.m.
