DIXFIELD — Sophomore Keegan Davis stepped up to the challenge and delivered a much-needed solid performance down the stretch for Mountain Valley.
Davis recorded a double-double, with 30 points and 13 rebounds, as the Falcons maintained their composure for a thrilling 78-67 double-overtime triumph against Dirigo at packed Defoe Gymnasium on Friday night.
Mountain Valley, currently 5-6 in Class B South, and Dirigo, 1-8 in Class C South, each planned an up-tempo game, and battled to the bitter end.
“This is a big win for us. It feels good,” Davis said. “The team was pumped; it’s a rivalry game.”
In the second extra session, Davis scored eight of the Falcons’ 12 points, including the first basket on an offensive rebound.
The defense prevented Dirigo from scoring, and turnovers and missed shots were key.
Zack Burgess (12 points) scored on a drive down the middle for a 71-65 lead, and Dirigo was forced to foul. Will Sorenson made a free throw and Davis made four more.
“We could have been out of here an hour ago if we had made free throws (at end of regulation),” Mountain Valley coach Tom Danylik said. “This is a great win for the program. In the second OT we finally figured it out. It was pure grit and determination by these guys. I am so proud of them.”
Dirigo’s Cooper Chiasson (18 points) had buried a long 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds in regulation to tie the score, 59-59. In the first overtime, Mountain Valley took a lead on Will Bean’s jumper and a free throw by Zach Duguay. Dirigo, though, tied it at 65 on Luke Lueders’ (15 points, five assists) free throw.
Alex Gorham also had 15 points for the Cougars.
