FREEPORT — State Police say one person has been killed and a second injured in the collision of a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle on I-295 in Freeport.

The tanker truck overturned in the median, which reduced north- and southbound lanes of I-295 down to one lane for six hours, disrupting traffic.

State Police said the driver of the truck, Richard Clark, 70, of Canaan, died instantly. Clark had tried to avoid a car police said had spun out in front of him.

The crash is in the soundbound lane at mile 22½, near the Freeport exit, and was reported about 10:15 a.m. The scene was cleared around 4 p.m. Saturday.

The driver of the car, Ashley Williams, 27, of Woolwich, was taken to Maine Medical Center with minor injuries.

The tractor-trailer was carrying thousands of gallons of milk, which spilled and began to freeze across the highway.

State police have not determined why Williams lost control of her car, which was demolished in the accident.

The accident remains under investigation. Troopers are also asking for any witnesses to the crash to call State Police in Gray at 207-657-3030.
