GARDINER (AP) — Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield has agreed to pay $225,000 to settle an investigation by Maine’s insurance superintendent over its failure to adequately track and respond to customer complaints.
Insurance Superintendent Eric Cioppa called the failure to respond in a timely manner a “serious issue.” His office conducted a survey of Anthem’s complaints because of missing or late responses forwarded to the bureau. He says the consent agreement requires Anthem to file a corrective plan within 30 days.
Anthem spokesman Colin Manning says the problems identified by the bureau were not handled according to company standards and that the company cooperated in the investigation. He says the individual who was responsible and the individual’s manager are “no longer with the company.”
