More than $14 million worth of road and bridge improvements are planned in Lewiston during the next several years.
The Maine Department of Transportation infrastructure work plan released Monday, which offers more than $2.3 billion in projects across the state, includes a number of them in Lewiston.
Among the projects eyed in the three-year plan are improvements to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge and paving work on Route 196 and Bartlett Street.
“Lewiston residents count on having safe and reliable transportation infrastructure every day,” Sen. Nate Libby, D-Lewiston, said.
Libby said the state “will keep supporting investments in maintenance and improvements.”
He also said more needs to be done “to increase pedestrian safety. This will continue to be a focus of mine going forward.”
The overall state plan includes 632 capital projects in 2017 that focus on highways and bridges, bus transit, passenger and freight railroad, aviation, ferries, ports and bicycle-pedestrian access.
It plans to spend nearly $6 million for repairs to the Bernard Lown Peace Bridge over the Androscoggin River between Lewiston and New Auburn.
The state is also eyeing fixes to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge’s ramps over the Maine Central Railroad tracks. It plans, too, to do some work in both directions on the span over the Androscoggin River.
