JAY — A flier will be mailed the week of Jan. 9 to inform residents that the Fire Rescue Department will be offering installation of free smoke alarms later in the month in conjunction with the American Red Cross.

The fliers from the Red Cross, which are being delivered to the Town Office on Monday, will be folded and mailed, Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere said.

Firefighters will be going door-to-door in some of the most populated areas of town on Saturday, Jan. 14, to see if people are interested in setting up an appointment to have a smoke detector installed.

Residents can also call the Town Office at 207-897-6785 to make an appointment to participate.

If an individual or a group is interested in volunteering to help, firefighters and others are meeting at 9 a.m. on Jan. 14 at the North Jay Fire Station, LaFreniere said.

Alarm installations will be done from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Jan. 28. Firefighters will also discuss escape plans from residences with people, if they are interested.

Volunteers can assist firefighters on the installation date.

The Fire Rescue Department has partnered with the American Red Cross in Maine and the Red Cross’ Home Fire Preparedness Campaign to provide and install free smoke alarms to reduce fire deaths and injuries.
