BETHEL — Juniors and seniors from Telstar Regional High School on Friday received advice and insight about life after high school from six alumni and four Telstar seniors taking college courses.

Telstar alumni John Lewis, TJ O’Connor, Maureen Glover, Becca Howard and Haley Peterson took questions from inquisitive seniors about college, employment and student loans.

Kellan True, Elijah Laird, Kristi Hanscom and Wynter Morin are Telstar seniors who attend classes at Central Maine Community College in Auburn.

Seniors asked a variety of questions, from how to choose a college, how to obtain scholarships, and how to balance academics, athletics and life at college.

Lewis, who is a member of the Norway Police Department, gave seniors insight on life in the military. Lewis joined the Marine Corps out of high school, attended a semester at Unity college, and spent a year in Afghanistan before returning home and spending two years as a boating deputy on Sebago Lake. In January 2016, he joined the Norway Police Department. 

Seniors were advised to do a few key things on their journey to higher education.

Howard, who attends Champlain College in Vermont and studies radiography, encouraged them to live on campus if they can, so they develop lasting relationships and get the full college experience.

Lewis told them how important it is to spend the summer after graduation with their friends, because they’ll see them less because to life’s demands.

Peterson, who attends CMCC and studies criminal justice, advised working over the summer before heading off to college so students have spending money.

O’Connor, who attends Colby-Sawyer College in New Hampshire and works for the school as an athletic trainer while studying for his master’s degree in business, discussed working for the school and encouraged seniors to do the same.

“I think it went really well,” Dean of Students Kristin Dacko said. “They asked a lot of good questions about life after school.”
