SALEM — Monmouth finished strong to claim a 56-49 boys’ basketball victory over Mt. Abram on Friday.
The Mustangs (2-7) trailed by five points after three quarters, but outscored the Roadrunners 23-11 in the final frame.
Hunter Richardson and Mat Foulke paced Monmouth’s offense with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Trevor Chaput put up 14 for Mt. Abram (0-8), and Dan Luce contributed 13.
Erskine 62, Mt. Blue 45
FARMINGTON — Jack Jowett lit ‘em up and Noah Bonsant shut ‘em down as Erskine earned a 62-45 boys’ basketball road win over Mt. Blue on Friday.
Jowett hit two 3-pointers and scored 23 points for the Eagles. Bonsant added 12 points, but also played a big role on defense.
“If he doesn’t block shots, he alters them,” Mt. Blue coach Brian Kelly said. “He was definitely a big factor in keeping us from scoring.”
James Anderson and Caleb Hall each scored 11 points for the Cougars in the loss.
Buckfield 43, St. Dom’s 26
BUCKFIELD — The Buckfield boys’ basketball team took over from the start in its 43-26 victory over St. Dominic Academy on Friday.
The Bucks held the Saints to two first-quarter points while scoring 11 points. Their lead grew to 15 points by halftime and 23 points after three quarters.
Zack Grove led Buckfield (3-4) with 16 points. Ethan Jackson and Jake Kraske contributed eight points apiece.
St. Dom’s (0-7) Riley Volpe scored a game-high 17 points, including four 3-pointers.
Vinalhaven 65, Rangeley 51
RANGELEY — Kyle LaRochelle’s career night wasn’t enough for Rangeley in its 65-51 boys’ basketball loss to Vinalhaven on Friday.
LaRochelle put up 36 points for the Lakers (2-5) in the loss.
Keon Avey and Cody Hamilton paced the Vikings (5-3) with 24 points apiece.
Spruce Mountain 61, Gray-NG 49
GRAY — Four players scored in double figures for Spruce Mountain in its 61-49 boys’ basketball win over Gray-New Gloucester on Friday.
Austin Darling led the Phoenix’s charge with 20 points. Andrew Shaw added 14 points, Noah Preble had 13 and Mason Shink scored 11.
John Martin hit four 3-pointers to finish with 18 points for the Patriots. Josiah Rottari contributed 11 points and Hunter Colby scored 10.
Fryeburg 54, Leavitt 43
FRYEBURG — Oscar Saunders led a balanced Fryeburg offense with 13 points in the Raiders’ 54-43 boys’ basketball win over Leavitt on Friday.
Cody Gullickson and Scott Parker added 10 points apiece for the Raiders (5-3).
Jack Sylvester led all scorers with 17 points for the Hornets (1-8).
South Portland 73, Lewiston 41
LEWISTON — South Portland scored early and often en route to 73-41 victory over Lewiston in boys’ basketball action.
The Red Riots opened the game outscoring Lewiston 20-5 in the first quarter.
Rauy Bol dropped in 18 points for South Portland (7-1), while Noah Marone had 14.
Noor Hussein had 12 points and 12 rebounds for Lewiston (1-7), while Ibn Khalid had 10 points.
Girls’ basketball
Lewiston 38, South Portland 53
SOUTH PORTLAND — Victoria Harris recorded a double-double but Lewiston fell to South Portland 53-38 in girls’ basketball action Friday.
Harris finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Morgan Eliasen and Maddy Foster added eight points apiece for the Blue Devils (4-4).
For the Red Riots (5-2), Meghan Graff topped all scorers with 22 points, while Maggie Whitmore finished with 10.
St. Dom’s 55, Buckfield 31
BUCKFIELD — All 12 players who entered the game for St. Dom’s scored in aits 55-31 victory over Buckfield.
Caroline Gastonuay paced the Saints (2-4) with 10 points. Janelle Bryant and Abigail Castonguay each had seven points.
Kali Litchfield scored 14 of the Bucks’ (1-5) 31 points in the losing effort.
Monmouth 58, Mt. Abram 19
SALEM — Monmouth Academy had a big third quarter as it pulled from Mt. Abram for a 58-19 victory.
The Muststangs outscored the Roadrunners 21-7 in the third. Maddie Amero had a game-high 11 points, while Tia Day chipped in with 10 points in the victory.
Summer Ross led the Roadrunners (4-3) with eight points.
Oxford Hills 54, Bonny Eagle 46
PARIS — It was a back-and-forth game between Oxford Hills and Bonny Eagle in a Class AA girls’ basketball contest, but the Vikings came out on top 54-46.
Jadah Adams dropped in 15 points in the victory and Julia Colby had 14 points as the Vikings improve to 8-0 on the season.
The Scots were led by Tracie Townsend, who led all scorers with 20 points.
Vinalhaven 58, Rangeley 36
RANGELEY — Vinalhaven had four girls score in double digits in a 58-36 victory over Rangeley.
Deja Doughty led Vinalhaven (6-1) with 15 points, and Amber Shane had 13 points. Ashlyn Littlefield chipped in with 11 points while Gilleyanne Davis-Oakes had 10 points for the Vikings.
Natasha Haley paced the Lakers (5-2) with 21 points while also grabbing eight rebounds.
Mt. Blue 40, Erskine Academy 35
SOUTH CHINA — Mt. Blue picked up its first victory of the year with a 40-35 victory over Erskine Academy in KVAC action.
Rebecca Harmon led the Cougars (1-6) with 12 points, while Leah St. Laurent had eight.
Catherine Silva had 11 points for Erskine (2-5).
Men’s basketball
Bates 75, Colby 62
WATERVILLE — Malcolm Delpeche was a factor in all facets in Bates College’s 75-62 win over Colby College in its NESCAC men’s basketball opener Friday.
Delpeche scored 15 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, blocked four shots, had three assists and a couple of steals for the Bobcats (10-3). He was 6-for-12 from the field and 3-for-3 at the free-throw line.
Jerome Darling scored a game-high 16 points for Bates, with 13 of those coming in the second half.
Patrick Stewart led Colby (6-5) with 13 points.
Bates plays at Bowdoin College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Johnson State 84, UMF 72
JOHNSON, Vt. — Isaac Witham scored a game-high 22 points, including 14 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough for UMaine-Farmington, which fell to Johnson State College, 84-72, in an NAC clash Friday night.
Benjamin Holl’s 3-pointer with five minutes left put the host Badgers (5-6, 2-3) up for good at 68-65. That was the sixth and final lead change of a close second half between the two conference rivals.
Dixfield native Riley Robinson added 18 points for the Beavers (5-6, 2-3), while Amir Moss pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
Kawaun Chavis led the Badgers with 21 points, while Jeyquan Johnson added 20 off the bench.
Women’s basketball
Bates 64, Colby 57
LEWISTON — Allie Coppola poured in a career-high 24 points to go with 16 rebounds and took over down the stretch to lead Bates to a 64-57 win over rival Colby in its NESCAC women’s basketball opener Friday night.
Coppola, who shot 10-for-11 from the field for the game, scored 12 of Bates’ 16 points in the fourth to help the Bobcats (4-8) finish off the victory. Bernadette Connors added 13 points and nine rebounds for Bates.
Haley Driscoll led the Mules (6-5) with 14 points.
UMF 69, Johnson State 66
JOHNSON, Vt. — The 15th and final lead change of the game went in favor of visiting UMaine-Farmington, which took over the lead with less than two minutes to play and held on for a 69-66 victory over Johnson State College in an NAC contest Friday night.
The game went back-and-forth from start to finish. The Badgers (4-6, 2-3) jumped out to a 10-5 lead, but the Beavers (2-7, 2-3) led by four at the end of the first quarter. The game was tied at halftime before the Beavers built their lead to 52-42 heading into the fourth.
Cheyenne Malloy led the Beavers with 13 points, while Kennadi Grover added 12 to go along with seven rebounds.
Sarah Voorhis and Nicole Menard each tallied a game-high 16 points for the Badgers, who also got 14 points and 14 rebounds from Kasey DeGreenia.
Junior hockey
Northeast 3, L/A 1
Attleboro, Mass. — The L/A Fighting Spirit couldn’t climb out of an early deficit as they dopped a 3-1 decision to the Northeast Generals on Friday afternoon.
Derric Trudeau notched his 10th goal for the Generals on the season, and Shawn Peckman and Tommy Bellew each scored their third goals of the year.
Denver Lundstrom notched his second goal of the year for the Fighting Spirit.
Leo Lake made 36 saves for the victory, and L/A’s Aaron Callan and Tyler Friel combined to make 23 saves in the loss.
