If you’re looking to get rid of your Christmas tree, don’t leave it by the curb in Lewiston or Auburn.

Public Works officials from both cities are reminding residents this week that Christmas trees will not be picked up during weekly trash collections.

Rob Stalford, superintendent of Lewiston’s Solid Waste Division, said Wednesday that the city has not picked up Christmas trees since 2011. He said the department’s fall and winter schedule was posted on the city’s website in September, which lays out residents’ options.

Those include bringing trees to the Public Works Yard on Adams Avenue or to the Solid Waste Facility on River Road.

“As was done last year, the city will not provide curbside collection of waste Christmas trees,” the city notice reads. “Please do not place waste Christmas trees curbside; they WILL NOT be collected by waste collection staff.”

In Auburn, Public Services Director Dan Goyette confirmed that city staff does not pick up trees. Residents can bring trees to the Auburn Public Services Department on Gracelawn Road.

However, if residents in either city are looking for a convenient pickup, he said, the Auburn-based Boy Scout Troop 121 will pick up trees this weekend, Jan. 7 and 8, for a minimum donation of $5.

This is the fifth year Troop 121 has offered the service, and, according to the group, money raised goes directly to troop activities.

To make a pickup request, send a donation to Troop 121, United Methodist Church, 439 Park Ave., Auburn, or call 207-783-0790.
