LEWISTON — The Friends of the Lewiston Public Library are selling notecards at the library featuring the Marsden Hartley painting, “Shady Brook.”

Hartley, a Lewiston-born artist, presented the library with this Maine landscape in 1907 and for most of the past 109 years, the oil painting has been on display at the library. The painting is headed to New York City early next year to be featured in a new exhibition, which opens on March 15, 2017, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

To celebrate both the artwork and the forthcoming exhibition, the Friends of LPL had the painting reprinted on notecards, which are now on sale at the library’s first floor Lending Services desk. The notecards are available for a donation of $2 each or in packets of six for $7.

The exhibition at the Met, Marsden Hartley’s Maine, will be on view in New York through June 18. The show will then move to the Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville July 8 through Nov. 12.

Marsden Hartley’s Maine will showcase the American artist’s lifelong engagement with his home state of Maine.

Approximately 90 paintings and drawings will illuminate his extraordinarily expressive range — from post-impressionist interpretations of seasonal change in inland Maine in the early 1900s to folk-inspired depictions of the state’s hearty inhabitants beginning in the late 1930s, as well as the state’s majestic coastline and great geological icon, Mount Katahdin.
