PORTLAND — Senior guard Jack Casale had a stellar game, scoring 28 points to lead Cheverus to a 54-44 victory over Oxford Hills in boys’ basketball action Thursday evening.

The Stags (5-1) shut down Oxford Hills in the second quarter and took a 27-17 halftime lead. Junior forward Jesse Matthews contributed 11 points for Cheverus.

Senior point guard Cole Verrier recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore forward Matt Fleming pitched in with 10 points for the Vikings (3-3) in the losing effort.

Buckfield 50, Rangeley 48

RANGELEY — Senior guard Jacob Kraske hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds and tossed a team-high 14 points as Buckfield grabbed a 50-48 victory in boys’ basketball action Thursday evening.

The Bucks (1-4) executed a well-balanced offense to squeak out their first win of the season. Junior guard Ethan Jackson contributed 13 points for Buckfield.

Junior guard Kyle LaRochelle notched a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds, while junior guard Zach Trafton provided 11 points for the Lakers (0-3) in the losing effort.

Deering 66, Lewiston 58

LEWISTON — Deering gained a four-point edge in the second quarter and hung on to secure a 66-58 victory over Lewiston in a boys’ basketball tilt Thursday.

Ben Oneck led the Rams (3-1) with 19 points, while Machar Nguany chipped in with 12.

The Blue Devils (0-5) had a powerful trio in double figures, led by the recently returned Ibn Khalid with 16 points. Garrett Poussard chipped in with 13 points, while Desmond Jackson added 12.

Brunswick 58, Leavitt 33

TURNER — Brunswick used an 18-6 third-quarter run to lock up a convincing 58-33 victory over Leavitt in more boys’ basketball action Thursday.

Josh Dorr led the Dragons (3-2) with 16 points, while David Benoit chipped in with 12.

The Hornets (0-6) were paced by Cole Morin and D’Andre James with six points each.

Boothbay 62, Monmouth 56

BOOTHBAY — Boothbay held a 29-point lead in the third quarter before holding off a late rally by Monmouth to come away with a 62-56 victory Thursday evening.

Jacob Leonard led the Seagulls (2-3) with 17 points, while Kyle Ames chipped in with 15.

The winless Mustangs (0-4) were led by Travis Hartford with 18 points, while Hunter Richardson tallied 17 and Mat Foulke added 14.

Winthrop 73, Mt. Abram 48

WINTHROP — Winthrop went on a 21-11 tear in the third quarter and pulled away to record a 73-48 win over Mt. Abram in more boys’ hoops action Thursday.

Garrett Tsouprake led the Ramblers (4-0) with a game-high 21 points, while Jacob Hickey chipped in with 15.

The Roadrunners (0-5) were led by Dan Luce with a 17-point effort, while Trevor Chaput tallied 11 and Nate Luce added 10.

Gray-New Gloucester 67, St. Dom’s 28

GRAY — Senior center Skye Conley scored a game-high 19 points as Gray-New Gloucester cruised to a 67-28 victory over St. Dom’s in girls’ basketball action Thursday evening.

The Patriots (5-0) raced to a 25-5 lead in the first quarter. Conley recorded 11 of her 19 points in the frame. Senior forward Izzy DeTroy contributed 14 points for Gray-New Gloucester.

The Saints (1-4) posted single digits in each quarter, including nine in the final frame. Senior guard Allie Veinote tossed four field goals from 3-point range and a free throw for a team-leading 13 points in the losing effort for St. Dom’s.

Messalonskee 60, Mt. Blue 23

FARMINGTON — Senior shooting guard Sophia Holmes exploded for 27 points as Messalonskee garnered a 60-23 triumph over Mt. Blue in girls’ basketball action Thursday evening.

The Eagles (5-0) were energized in the second quarter, scoring 25 points to take a 35-6 halftime lead. Junior point guard Alli Turner contributed 11 points for Messalonskee.

Senior forward Kasadie Barker paced the Cougars (0-5) with eight points on four field goals in the losing effort.

Brunswick 64, Leavitt 41

BRUNSWICK — Freshman guard Madeline Suhr and junior guard Sabrina Armstrong poured in 18 points each as Brunswick sailed to a 64-41 victory over Leavitt in girls’ basketball action Thursday evening.

Suhr netted six field goals, including a 3-pointer, and five free throws, while Armstrong made a whopping 11 free throws to go along with three field goals, including a three-pointer, for the Dragons (4-1).

Junior guard Elizabeth Goulette had three 2s, three 3s and three free throws for 18 points for the Hornets (3-3), while senior forward Allie Belaire tallied 11 points in the losing effort.

Boothbay 44, Monmouth 37

BOOTHBAY — Page Brown poured a game-high 19 points into the net to propel Boothbay t0 a 44-37 victory over Monmouth in an early season girls’ basketball tilt Thursday.

Faith Blethen chipped in for the Seagulls (6-0) with 16 points in an effective two-player attack.

The Mustangs (4-1) were paced by Tia Day with 13 points, while Hannah Anderson chipped in with seven.

Rangley 55, Buckfield 15

RANGELEY — After sprinting out to an 18-point advantage in the first quarter, Rangeley coasted to a 55-15 romp over Buckfield in more girls’ basketball action Thursday.

Sydney Royce led the Lakers (2-1) with 19 points, while Natasha Haley chipped in with 18.

Kali Litchfield paced the Bucks with a six-point effort.

Poland 47, Spruce Mountain 37

POLAND — Poland saved the best for last, using a 15-8 run in the fourth quarter to secure a 47-37 early season victory over Spruce Mountain on Thursday.

Jess Seeley led the undefeated Knights (5-0) with 16 points, while Morgan Brousseau chipped in with a solid 11-point performance.

The Phoenix (2-3) were paced by Alex Bessey with 15 points, highlighted by two shots from beyond the arc. Haley Turcotte also contributed with 10 points.

Mt. Abram 53, Winthrop 47

SALEM — Mt. Abram went on a 12-4 run in the second quarter to take command and hung on for a 53-47 win over Winthrop in girls’ hoops action Thursday.

Lindsey Hough led the Roadrunners (3-1) with 15 points, while Sally Stevens and Meg Sorel added 11 points each.

The Ramblers (2-3) were paced by Adlin Chaparin with a solid 12-point effort, the team’s only player to reach double figures.

Edward Little 75, Portland 41

PORTLAND — Edward Little jumped out to a 23-point advantage in the first frame and never eased off the gas, racing away to record a 75-41 romp victory over Portland in an early season girls’ hoops tilt Thursday evening.

Jordyn Reynolds led the Red Eddies (3-2) with a game-high 21 points, while Grace Fontaine tallied 15 and Piper Norcross added 11.

The winless Bulldogs (0-5) were paced by Taylor Sargeant, the only player to reach double figures. 

Deering 58, Lewiston 42

PORTLAND — After sprinting out to a commanding 15-point advantage in the first frame, Deering pulled steadily away to record a 58-42 victory over Lewiston in a hard-fought girls’ tilt Thursday evening. 

Amanda Brett led the Rams (4-1) with 19 points, while Tasia Titherington chipped in with 15. 

Hannah Chaput led the Blue Devils (2-2) with a solid 14-point effort, while Victoria Harris added 12.

Lisbon 43, Dirigo 31

DIXFIELD — Kaylin Le poured in 14 points to lead Lisbon to a 43-31 victory over Dirigo in girls’ basketball action Thursday evening.

The Greyhounds (3-2) jumped out to a 16-5 first quarter lead. Kipri Steele contributed 11 points for Lisbon.

Sophia Jacques tossed five field goals, including four from 3-point range, for 14 points to lead the Cougars (1-4) in the losing effort.

Girls’ ice hockey

St. Dom’s 9, Cheverus 0

PORTLAND — Sophomores Emma Theriault and Kristina Cornelio netted two goals each as St. Dom’s blanked Cheverus 9-0 in girls’ ice hockey action Thursday evening.

The Saints (5-0) scored seven goals in the second period and held on for a shutout.

Stags forward Olivia Adams performed well in the zone with good penetration despite the losing effort.
