LEWISTON — Baby, it’s (about to be) cold outside — and it’s time to bundle up.

The National Weather Service is forecasting wind chill temperatures as low as 30 below zero later this week in parts of central Maine. Such low temperatures can result in serious health and safety risks, including frostbite and hypothermia.

Signs of frostbite are pale, gray or blistered skin on the fingers, ears, nose and toes. For hypothermia, signs include shivering, confusion, memory loss and slurred speech, according to the National Weather Service.

If you or a loved one suffer from these conditions, seek immediate medical attention.

The American Red Cross and the National Weather Service offer the following cold-weather safety tips:

• Layer up clothing for extra insulation;
