1922 – 2016
SOUTH PARIS — Elliot Lauriston Wiggin, 94, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 6, at the Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris, where he was a resident.
He was born Nov. 8, 1922, to Roy and Ida Louise Wiggin in Westbrook, and graduated in 1941 from Gorham High School. In 1943, he joined the U.S. Army and during his enlistment worked in the Signal Corps.
In 1948, he married Alice Pierce and they had three children together. Later, he married the love of his life, Methyl Hamel. They enjoyed 44 years together before she passed away in 2015.
Many of his working years were spent as a psychiatric aide in various state hospitals, ending with many years before he retired at Pineland Hospital for the mentally challenged.
He leaves behind a stepson, Richard Sawyer of Norway; a daughter, Shirley Killam and her husband, Steve, of Wilton; a daughter, Catherine May of Auburn; a son, Stephen and his wife, Cynthia, of Hawaii; many grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to extend our deepest thanks to every staff member at the Veterans’ Home. Anyone who had any contact with Elliot was unfailingly kind, caring and professional. All of his family are grateful he had the opportunity to be there during his last year.
