I want to recognize the accomplishments of two of Lewiston’s own, who were recently elected to leadership roles in Augusta by their peers.
Incoming Assistant Minority Leader Sen. Nate Libby, who I served with on the Lewiston City Council during some difficult years, has the proven track record and ability to work across aisles for good public policy. Whether advocating for welfare reform, lead poisoning prevention or safer transportation, he is known to work with those holding opposing viewpoints when for the betterment of our community — a rare quality in these times, but one that is necessary to do the people’s work and one that the public should expect from its elected officials.
In addition, incoming Assistant Majority Leader Rep. Jared Golden, who I have recently worked with on passenger rail matters, is an excellent example of service before self — another rare, yet required quality sorely needed in the State House. Rep. Golden served this nation in combat and went on to represent the community during some difficult times during his first term in office. His work on veterans’ issues is just one example of his ability to find solutions among peers and stakeholders.
The Lewiston community should continue to engage with these public servants in supportive ways. Dialogue for good public policy must begin with the public. Good work doesn’t always have a label.
I am grateful for their new roles and continued service to this community.
