In much the same way Michael Bloomberg attempted to “NYC” Maine’s gun laws, it looks like Sen. Nathan Libby, D-Lewiston, is trying to use personal tragedies to sell a political agenda from away. What bothers me with Sen. Libby is that his political narrative sidelines the real issue, which isn’t about bike lanes heading out of town, but crosswalk safety downtown.

I don’t remember Sen. Libby fighting for crosswalk safety when he was a city councilor, only bike lanes on lower Lisbon Street. I don’t recall Libby ever fighting for crosswalk safety as a senator after two successive deaths on upper Lisbon Street until the tragedy on Main Street, or was it the City Council’s decision on Sabattus Street that triggered it?

Lewiston residents sent a clear message to city councilors regarding the section of Sabattus Street heading out of town. But, that’s a message Sen. Libby doesn’t care for.

Playing on people’s emotions and heartstrings has always been Sen. Libby’s handicraft, and those of us who were actually born and raised here and truly understand Lewiston’s infrastructure aren’t buying it.
