I feel compelled to respond to Thomas Lord’s letter to the editor (Nov. 23), titled “Reaction was un-American.”
He wrote, “I’m sure it was OK with liberal professors for students of all such universities to walk out of class and attempt to de-legitimize Donald Trump’s election. How un-American.”
I, too, wish people were more American — like Donald Trump, who ran a campaign based on prejudices against minorities and women. More American, when he started his political career by asking President “Hussein” Obama for his “papers please.” More American, like Mitch McConnell, Republican leader of the Senate who, in 2012, stated “my No. 1 goal is to make sure that Barack Obama is a one-term president!” More American, like Republican legislatures changing voting laws to prevent poor people and minorities from casting their votes.
Yeah — now that’s really American.
More American, when women and African Americans were not allowed to vote, when it was legal to pay women a lesser salary than men for doing the same work. More American, like accosting a woman for wearing a hijab, or throwing gay people off bridges.
Oh, how I long for the good old days, as I’m sure Lord does, when we did not have to deal with those protests — that “political correctness” baloney that drowns out our own prejudices.
Why, the nerve of those “radical” Bates students. Those “liberal” professors put them up to it, for at such an impressionable young age, they are unable to think for themselves.
