LEWISTON — Opening night of a season is often filled with nervous anxiety.

Both Lewiston/Oak Hill/Monmouth girls’ hockey coach Ron Dumont and Mt. Ararat/Morse leader Ron Hutchins were prepared for the nerves to play out.

What helped the host Blue Devils was a solid start in Friday’s opener at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee, as they scored four goals in the opening 4:10 of the contest en route to an 11-0 win.

Freshman Adri Roy scored the first two Blue Devils goals, and by the time sophomore Jessica Clavet and freshman Veda Leclerc each slipped a shot past Eagles starting goaltender Lily Schenk, the Lewiston had a comfortable advantage.

“When you look at the starting lineup, there are three freshmen in there,” said Dumont, who watched Eagles forward Kieley Hetherington fire the game’s first shot on Blue Devils goaltender Meagan Gosselin, who had 11 saves. “The first shift, you could tell the nerves were there. We were missing Katie (Lemieux) and the captain (Chloe Martin). They did a heck of a job all the way around. The key was getting out there quick those first few shifts.”

Lewiston kept coming in the opening frame, taking a 6-0 lead through 15 minutes on a pair of power-play goals. Jordan Mynahan scored the first goal with the man advantage, and Molly Chicoine finished off a strong opening frame during which the Blue Devils outshot the Eagles, 24-2.

“The power play worked really well, and I wanted to see how well it was going to work,” said Dumont, whose Blue Devils were 2-for-4 on the power play.

“It was tough to keep the girls heads in the game and keep it positive,” said Hutchins, whose Eagles will visit Yarmouth/Freeport/Gray-New Gloucester on Tuesday at 7 p.m. “Lewiston played fantastic. They were fast and disciplined, all the things that we strive to do.”

Mt. Ararat/Morse played a solid second period, keeping the score 6-0.

“We started to control the neutral zone a bit and that allowed us to generate some things,” said Hutchins, whose squad was outshot 12-3 in the frame. “We gave the second and third line some more time. We just need to keep our heads high and push on.”

Lewiston again found its flow in the second frame. Mynahan, who led the Blue Devils with two goals and two assists, scored her team’s seventh goal, followed by Roy completing her hat trick. Clavet, Jaylin Cloutier and Dodge also scored in the frame to complete the scoring.

“We lost a couple key players from last year, so the good start tonight gave us a lot of confidence,” said Dodge, who picked up a goal and two assists. “The nerves went away pretty fast tonight. The start helped, then we started passing around and getting everyone into the game.”

Lewiston, which hosts Winslow/Erskine Academy on Wednesday at 7:25 p.m., finished with a 50-11 shot advantage.

Mt. Ararat/Morse failed to score on its four power-play chances.
