AVON — A Phillips man was charged with leaving the scene of an accident after his vehicle went off Route 4 on Monday afternoon, Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols said in an email.
Franklin County Deputy Brad Scovil responded to a report of a crash at 3:09 p.m. and found a vehicle well off the road.
“There was air bag deployment, visible blood, crushed roof — all indications of a person being injured as a result of the accident,” Nichols wrote.
According to the sheriff, a woman using a cane to walk arrived soon after emergency personnel and claimed to be the driver. Because she had no injuries consistent with the crash and she could not walk without a cane, she could not have gotten out of the vehicle herself. She eventually admitted that Michael Harriman, 26, of Phillips was the driver and she had come to the scene to cover for him.
Harriman’s 4-year-old son, who was in the car with him when it crashed, was checked by rescue personnel at the scene, Nichols wrote.
It was unknown what the relationship is between Harriman and the woman.
Harriman was found and he admitted to being the driver and having the woman cover for him because he was on probation and his license was suspended, the sheriff wrote.
Harriman was evaluated at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington and was taken to the Franklin County Detention Center in Farmington. He is charged with leaving the scene of an accident and is being held without bail because he is on probation, a spokesman said.
