Mystery Photo for November 20, 2016
People called or sent in guesses that last week’s Mystery Photo of the beautiful mural was in places from Augusta to Italy. Many, however, correctly guessed it is the one above the entrance to Clover Health Care in Auburn. The work of art was hand painted by Portland artist Elizabeth Wolfe. The winner, chosen randomly from the correct entries, was Debra Nickerson of Auburn, who shared that she worked at Clover for more than a dozen years. She remembers “a big stir” from people who were offended by a certain part of male anatomy in the original artwork. After much discussion, the artist returned and painted a cloud over the objectionable area. Many residents and staff argued that if it was OK to show naked women, why cover up a male’s private parts. It was a bone of contention at the time but has since become a funny story to tell when the mural is discussed. Nickerson is the winner of a $20 gift card courtesy of Hannaford Supermarkets.
