PORTLAND — Forbes magazine says Maine is the second-worst state in which to do business.
The magazine’s annual ranking, issued Wednesday, put Maine behind only West Virginia. The report cited Maine’s high cost of doing business, strict regulatory environment, weak labor supply, and poor growth prospects.
Maine has historically done poor in the ranking, ranking in last place from 2010 to 2013.
Forbes says its ranking takes into account dozens of metrics from 17 sources. The one place where the state scored well was in quality of life, where Maine came in at No. 15.
The top state on this year’s list was Utah, followed by North Carolina, Nebraska, Texas and Colorado. The bottom state was West Virginia, followed by Maine, Mississippi, Alaska and New Mexico
