WEST PARIS — The Board of Selectmen on Thursday voted to make West Paris a “truck town” again, which means truckers can register rigs weighing more than 26,000 pounds locally.

Town Manager Wade Rainey supported the measure.

“We get fees and excise, and it is more convenient for local truckers,” he said. 

Although out-of-town truckers may also choose to register in West Paris, Rainey anticipates there will be no impact on residents conducting business at the Town Office.

After a discussion on some of the ramifications of the new law legalizing marijuana, the board tabled taking any action.

Rainey reported that the Planning Board has suggested any proposed social club be located away from the town water supply.

The board will schedule one or two public hearings or informational meetings on the issues prior to the town meeting.

“It should be more than just our opinions,” Chairman Dennis Henderson said.

West Paris regulates the sale of hard liquor already, restricting its sale to bars only.

In other action the board:

• Voted to deny Kalvin Mason’s junkyard application, based on past performance and the $2,200 in attorney fees the town has paid so far in the ongoing dispute;

• Voted to change the town employees’ workweek to start on Sunday and end on Saturday at midnight; and

• Accepted the resignation of Fire Chief Norman St. Pierre, effective Dec. 31.

Rainey announced the Agnes Gray Elementary School will hold a drill requiring closing Route 219 and creating detour around the school.

The next board meeting will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23.
