BIDDEFORD — The University of Maine at Farmington’s field hockey season ended with a 5-0 loss to 19th-ranked University of New England in the Division III playoffs Wednesday.

Four different players scored for the Nor’easterners, who improve to 20-3 and advance to face No. 3 Tufts University on Saturday in Medford Massachusetts.

Marge Gardiner, Becky Zakorchemny, Desirae LeBlanc each scored once to give New England a 3-0 lead, then Bridget Cavanaugh capped the offensive output with goals in the 49th and 53rd minutes.

UMF finishes the 2016 campaign with an 13-5 mark. The Beavers were outshot 23-4. Goalkeeper Patty Smith made 12 saves. Jenessa Talarico and Nickyia Lovely both had shots on goal.

St. Joseph’s 1, Montclair State 0

MONTCLAIR, N.J. — Former Oak Hill High School field hockey standout Kayla Veilleux helped St. Joseph’s College pull off a major upset by defeating No. 10 Montclair State, 1-0, in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs Wednesday at Sprague Field.

Monks goalkeeper Megan Baker stopped all seven shots she faced to notch the shutout. Late in the first half, though, Montclair’s Kaitlyn Struss flipped the ball past Baker and toward the goal, but Veilleux was there to knock the ball out and maintain the scoreless tie.

St. Joe’s freshman Libby Pomerleau broke the stalemate with 16:58 remaining in the game. Pomerleau fired a shot that was blocked by Montclair goalie Kaitlin Maguire, but Pomerleau controlled the resulting ricochet and and fired it past Maguire for the game’s only goal.

The Monks, making their first NCAA tournament appearance, advance to face No. 12 Skidmore College at Tufts University on Saturday.
