1930 – 2016
SOUTH PARIS — Romeo Lucien Castonguay, 86, of South Paris and formerly of Jay, passed away at the Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris on Tuesday, Nov. 1, where he had been a resident just short of one year.
He was born Sept. 22, 1930, at the family farm on the Tessier Road, Jay, a son of George and Albertha (Moreau) Castonguay. He took great pride in living nearly his entire lifetime on this farm, with the love of his life, Claire, with whom he proudly raised their five children.
Romeo served in the U.S. Army from September 1954 to 1956. On Sept. 21, 1959, at St. Rose of Lima Church, Jay, he married Claire Dubord. She predeceased him in 2008.
For many years, he was employed by the U.S. Postal service, retiring in December 1990.
His dedication to family, his strong work ethic, his stewardship of caring for the land and his “Golden Rule” approach to living is a legacy that will be shared and cherished for generations.
He is survived by five children, Rachel Parker and her husband, David, of Pownal, Real Castonguay and his wife, Tam, of Brunswick, Denise Cloutier and her husband, Reynald, of Jay, Martin Castonguay and his life companion, Andrea’ Bradford, of Jay, and Roland Castonguay and his wife, Carrie, of Jay; 10 grandchildren, Emily Jones and her husband, Karlton, of New Gloucester, Daniel Castonguay and fiancée, Jaci Aleks, of Westbrook, Desiree Castonguay of DeSoto, Ill., Curtis Cloutier and companion, Olivia Belcher, of Jay, Hillary Flagg and husband, Lyle (U.S. Air Force), of Ladson, S.C., Dylan Castonguay (U. S. Navy) and fiancée, Alexi Galli, of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Catherine (Catie) Castonguay (U.S. Army) Fort Riley, Kan., Caroline Rowell and her companion, Christian O’Connell, of Lisbon, Mariah Castonguay and companion, Adam Mitchell, of Jay, and Casey Parker of York; two great-granddaughters Hadley and Peyton Jones; siblings, Jane St. Pierre, Francis (Frank) Castonguay, Bertrand (Bert) Castonguay and wife, Rita, Annette (Dadette) St. Pierre, Constance St. Pierre, Andre Castonguay, Laurianne Castonguay, Maryette Castonguay and Elaine Castonguay, all of the Jay-Livermore Falls area.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a sister, Bernadette.
His family would like to publicly thank the staff in the B Unit of the Maine Veterans’ Home for the excellent care and especially the love given to Romeo, as well as the support given to them during his stay there.
