FARMINGTON — The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey needed two overtimes to break a scoreless stalemate and defeat Husson 1-0 in the North Atlantic Conference East championship game on Sunday.
At the 10:45 mark of the second overtime, UMF sophomore rebounded a blocked shot and knocked in the game-winner to give the Beavers the division championship.
UMF advances to the Crossover Championship against NAC West champion Wells on Saturday.
Beavers defender Lee-Anne Greenleaf was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Teammates joining Greenleaf on the all-tournament team are Emmah Spahr, Patty Smith, Torrie Nightingale and Andrea Stemm.
Men’s basketball
CMCC 73, Williamson 70
SOUTH PORTLAND — The Central Maine Community College men’s basketball team edged Williamson Trade School of Philadelphia 73-70 in the second game of the SMCC invitational tournament Sunday.
The Mustangs used full-court pressure to build 14-4 lead, but Williamson bounced back to tie the game at 22-22.
CMCC’s full-court press and 10-man rotation wore down the Mechanics, and the Mustangs held a five point lead with five minutes to play, and they held on despite turning the ball over in the final 30 seconds.
Rob Skinner led CMCC with 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists, and Cornelius Lawhorn put up 11 points. Pietro Badalassi was an all-around contributor to the victory, scoring eight points, grabbing nine boards and dishing out four assists.
The Mustangs (3-1) defeated Holyoke 114-78 on Saturday in the openind day of the tournament and have now won three straight games. Their next game is at home against conference foe Unity on Thursday.
