RUMFORD — Mountain Valley continued to run wild in Friday’s Class C South football game against Poland.
The Falcons broke things open by scoring five touchdowns — including runs by Kyle Farrar, Nick Newman and Elijah Turner — in the second quarter en route to a 53-12 win at Chet Bulger Field.
The Falcons have now won two straight games and have four wins for the first time since 2012, when they reached the conference finals.
Mountain Valley (4-3) established the line of scrimmage early on and didn’t let up, and the defense held Poland to 104 yards of total offense.
On the second play from the line of scrimmage, Newman, the quarterback, faked a handoff, cut the opposite direction and sprinted away for a 45-yard touchdown. Farrar kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.
“We needed to make a statement,” Mountain Valley two-way starter Curtis Gauvin said. “We did so by scoring on our first possession, and that actually provided us with the momentum that we needed and it carried us through the rest of the way.”
Poland (1-6) wasn’t intimidated and picked up a couple first downs by running back Austin Bouchard (41 yards, 16 carries). The Knights, who will play Gray-New Gloucester next Friday for a playoff berth, held their ground defensively on Mountain Valley’s next series.
That didn’t last, though, because Gauvin recorded a sack to force a three-and-out.
“We stopped them early and often,” Falcon linebacker Ian Brennick said. “Every one (contributed) and we wanted them to know that this is our house.”
Mountain Valley started on its own 38-yard line and made a statement. On the third play, Farrar broke loose for 39 yards, and then Farrar (54 yards, three carries in first half) ran around the right side for a 14-yard touchdown.
“Our objective on offense was to get down to business,” Mountain Valley coach Pat Mooney said. “We ran right at them and the offensive line executed their blocks. “On the ensuing possession, Downing (5-of 11 for 20 yards) was intercepted by Nate White who ran untouched for a 27-yard TD.
The Falcons’ Joseph Blanchard sacked Downing and Tyler Murray recovered a fumble. Newman threw to Gauvin, who caught the ball on his fingertips and ran in a 34-yard TD.
This was the second-straight game the Falcons had their original starting unit on the offensive line playing together, and only the second time since the preseason.
Falcons defensive back Jacob Blanchard then picked off a pass, leading to a Newman 21-yard touchdown. Poland turned the ball over and Elijah Turner ran for a 39-yard TD. Freshman Dylan Desroches kicked the PAT for a 39-0 lead with four seconds left in the first half.
Mountain Valley’s Jasper Turner and Andrew McDonald each had rushing TDs in the second half.
